Visit to the National Gallery
Yesterday afternoon , after spending the morning taking some pictures I went along to the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square to see an exhibition called Seduced by Art.
I had seen the exhibition advertised at Waterloo Station last week when I was taking pictures for one of my exercises. I also noted that works by Martin Parr would be on show. I had looked at some of his work on-line a few weeks ago and thought that it would be nice to see his work for myself.
The exhibition was attempting to show how photographers , having possibly looked at painted works of art had attempted to produce a thought-provoking photograph in the same fashion.
For example an image by Goya of the Duke of Wellington, with his medals on display which had been imaged by an artist called Jorma Puranen was hung next to this image:-
Looking at the images as I walked around it really gave me ideas on what sort of images I would like to take. Some of the images were simple portraits, others like a room in disarray , would, I would think cause people to consider if it was art at all. Probably in a similar way that people look at other artists work. I would think that the work by Trace Emin, entitled My Bed, would be one that springs to mind. It’s a most thought-provoking look at her personal life. In a quote I found in relation to the image it said
” By presenting her bed as art, Tracey Emin shares her most personal space, revealing she’s as insecure and imperfect as the rest of the world.”
Just the ticket!!
