New Course , New Tutor and thanks to my old Tutor.
Today I received an email from my new tutor, Mr Jesse Alexander. I had a look at his website which was very interesting. Later I had a quick chat with him and I will speak to him once my course notes have arrived.
This evening I spoke to my old tutor, Mr Taylor, to thanks him for his help over the last two courses.
As he has always done he offered me advice and help.
He has really helped and guided me over the last two years and I very grateful to him.
Visit to Manchester Art Gallery-Mark Leckey – Work and Leisure
Whilst in Manchester I visited the Manchester Art Gallery. They had an exhibition by Mark Leckey, a Turner Prize winner.
The exhibition did not contain Photographs. So why did I go? Well Mark , as part of his exhibition, uses video. Now that many DSLR’s are able to capture video I thought I would see how he does it.
The exhibition covered key moments in his career and covered parts of his life in Manchester including the Manchester dance and music scene.
Work & Leisure
It was interesting to see how the videos were shot and placed into his exhibition. I don’t know how they were shot.
I have read that many photographers are now taking videos as well as taking images as they are demanded by newspapers and news companies, I suppose that this has increased due to the internet, with papers also having news websites.
Assignment 4-Real or Fake-Feedback.
Today I got my feedback for the above assignment. Mr Taylor said:-
“Technically, the aim of the assignment has been successfully achieved, although I feel that the design of the cover could be improved”
I am going to read his report again today and look at the cover that I produced, then I will make the improvements that he has suggested.
Later today I will also post Assignment 5.
Mr Taylor’s report also states the following:-
One of the recent developments within OCA is that students should receive a clear statement of their readiness for assessment. This is to be given with the second and penultimate assignments. In your case the appropriate statement is as follows.
“I understand your aim is to go for the Photography Degree and that you plan to submit your work for assessment at the end of this course. From the work you have shown in this assignment, and providing you commit yourself to the course, I suggest that you are likely to be successful in the assessment. “
Good news then, I will wait for the OCA to contact me to let me know when the assessment dates are.
Well back to assignment 4 after reading my tutor’s report I looked at the magazine cover that I produced, it was a bit cluttered and the images did blend into each other.
I decided that I would reduce the amount of information on the cover and make the words stand out.
Here is my new cover
What did I do differently:-
- The background image, which was the base of the cover, was cleaned up, removing the bright colours.
- The police car was cropped out and enlarged using Photoshop. This gave me a cleaner area to work with.
- The crest was made smaller, but bolder and placed in the centre at the top.
- The colour of the title letters was made bolder and clearer, with just blue used.
- The title letters of each story were all turned to black.
- The main story of the issue, London 2012 are we ready was made to stand-out more , so it grabbed the attention of the reader as the magazine sat on the shelf.
- The date and issue number are made smaller so they don’t compete for the reader’s attention. However I kept the red script to aid in filing.
Feedback Assessment 3-Monochrome
Today I got my feedback from my tutor, Mr Taylor, for assessment 3-monochrome. I was very pleased with his comments especially as I was using a new camera , that I have to say is not as good as my own. Not only did he look at the images that I submitted but he also commented on the images that I rejected.
A couple of the rejected images, he suggested, could be improved. So here are a selection of the images that have been improved taking into account Mr Taylor’s comments. I was a little restricted in what I could do due to the type of files that the new camera produces.
(Sorry about the last two images, Lightroom has added a copyright name which I am trying to remove)
I have printed the images and will submit them for formal assessment.
