Assignment Five
The special element of this final part is the assignment itself.
The great distinction between a professional and amateur photographer is that the professional is working to a task set by a client.
For this last assignment I have to:-
- Decide on a client
- Chose the kind of client
- The purpose of the assignment
- Take the images
- Produce the product.
The brief that I have received is as follows.
St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel
Euston Road
London, England
NW1 2QR
United Kingdom
Dear Mr Cummins
Re Request for marketing product to be designed and produced for 2013 mail-shot.
Thank you for taking the time to visit us last week. As you will have seen after years of devoted restoration the St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel is being hailed as London’s most romantic building.
Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott to receive travellers through St Pancras Station the former Midland Grand Hotel offered its guests a world of grandeur luxury and fantasy behind its fairytale red facade.
As part of the Marriott Group of hotels it is company policy to arrange, at this time of year, a mail-shot to our business customers in order that they will continue to use our facility.
After the success of last years promotion which was UK-based we have decided that we will also send the products to our continental customer base due to our close proximity to the Eurostar station.
In view of this it has been decided that the cost of this years promotion will be subsidised by Eurostar and Network Rail (Station owners) and we would wish that your product reflect this.
Please contact me when you have a design in mind. We would want the selected product to be of a quality that reflects the standards of the hotel and most importantly that the product will last for the year, as this is the most cost-effective.
kind regards
The assignment
After receiving the brief I had to look at the product that would be available to me that could be sent out as part of a mail-shot.
There are many products available as you can see
These are the sort of products that are available but how do you incorporate the images, does a hotel really want their pictures on a mug! The other important thing to remember is that the product should last over a year.
How long do free pens last?
Looking at a business woman’s/mans desk , what do you see?
And what will last the year?
So from this I decided that I would produce a Deluxe Desk Calendar that could be sent to the people on the mailing list.
Why?
- It is an item that has a use, most people will use a calendar.
- You can show more than one image of the place you are promoting as you have 52 weeks to fill or 12 months depending on the type of calendar.
How will it be made?
I decided after two visits to the station that I would divide the images into two sections, the station including the trains and the hotel.
The images would be in colour to show how the station looks after the restoration.
Here are the images that I have chosen:-
The arrival of a train welcomed by a statue of a man.
Eurostar train (including logo) with the station in the background.
The Hotel , the customer, name clearly shown.
Bar in the station, taken with customers to show its popular, again name shown.
Menu picked as it shows champaign bottle, a certain class of drinker!!
Hotel Bar, classic shot showing customers and the style of the building
Shot of the hotel lounge again showing the customers and the blue metal refurbished steel frame.
Another view of the lounge
Further shot of the station, another place to eat and the famous statue.
Detail of the statue.
Well these are the images that I have chosen. I think that they show interesting details of three aspects of the various customers, the station, the trains and the hotel.
The images that advertise the various companies have the name on show but it is not “in your face” it’s rather subtle.
The images will now go off to the designer for the calendar to be made
I will update my assignment when the calendars arrive.
